Case Study:

Great Western Railway

Description

With around 5,000 employees, Great Western Railway (GWR) faced a major culture challenge after an internal survey exposed high levels of concern around bullying, harassment and discriminatory behaviour. The response was bold: launch a flagship campaign, ‘Stamp it Out,’ backed by a new Respect and Dignity at Work policy.

CMP was brought in to deliver this at scale. Over the course of a year, we partnered closely with GWR to embed long-term behavioural change. We designed and facilitated over 300 interactive workshops for 3,000 employees, including 650 managers, across 15 sites. The programme used hard-hitting video content to spark honest conversations, challenge assumptions and create space for lasting shifts in behaviour.

To ensure internal capability, CMP also assessed and trained 14 GWR facilitators using a rigorous two-day development programme. Alongside this, we managed the entire multi-site rollout, a complex logistical task requiring precision delivery and consistent quality.

The results were transformative. Serious grievances fell by 66 percent year-on-year, attendance rose from 93 to 96 percent and 72 percent of employees responded positively to dignity and respect in the workplace in the follow-up engagement survey. The initiative was recognised with the Personnel Today award for Excellence in Employee Relations.
